MARQORA · DATED RESEARCH EXAMPLE

Bassett Furniture Industries, Incorporated

NASDAQ:BSET · Analysis dated

This is a dated research example, not a recommendation based on today’s stock price.

Reference price: $21.49, recorded . The assessment below uses that price and the information available for the original analysis. Dollar amounts are in U.S. dollars.

What the company does

Bassett designs, makes, and sells furniture through its own stores, licensed stores, and other furniture retailers. Sales depend heavily on the U.S. housing market and households’ willingness to make large purchases.

One strength

In the third fiscal quarter, revenue rose to $82.84 million and operating profit to $2.78 million. Operations are improving, although tariff refunds explain part of that improvement.

One important risk

In the first nine months, cash left after investment was only about $1.14 million, while dividend payments totaled $5.18 million. Weak demand and long-term store leases could limit the company’s financial flexibility.

Is the stock reasonably priced?

At $21.49, the stock appears expensive. The base scenario estimates a value of $16.00 per share in two years. Requiring a 12% annual return lowers the acceptable price at the analysis date to about $12.75, below the reference price.

Overall assessment

Bassett is earning more again, but the $21.49 reference price already assumes a strong, lasting recovery. Cash left after investment does not cover the dividend payout, and tariff refunds helped earnings. Together, these factors make the stock unattractive at that price in this analysis.

What could go well

More furniture orders and better use of factories and stores could increase earnings. A lasting rise in the stock price would require that improvement to continue beyond a single quarter.

Terms used below

Revenue is money from sales. Operating profit is what remains after operating expenses, before interest and taxes. Free cash flow is cash from operations minus the investment spending specified in the analysis. A margin shows how much of each sales dollar remains as profit.

Earnings per share (EPS) divides profit among shares. The price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) compares the share price with annual EPS. A scenario shows what a set of assumptions would imply; it is not a promised outcome.

Business performance

Bassett combines its own manufacturing, wholesale, and retail operations. In the third quarter through August 29, 2026, revenue rose from $80.103 million to $82.838 million; operating income increased from $0.593 million to $2.782 million. Over nine months, revenue was nearly unchanged at $246.931 million versus $246.613 million. The quarterly improvement is therefore not yet a broad growth trend. Of $2.8 million in tariff refunds received, about $1.0 million had already been recognized in the quarterly margin. This relief is not a lasting, recurring sales achievement.

Cash, debt, and cash flow

As of the August reporting date, $35.372 million in cash and $18.023 million in short-term investments were available. Operating lease liabilities of $82.713 million remain economically relevant; other obligations also apply. Guarantees used $5.866 million of the available credit line. This does not mean the company had borrowed that amount in cash. Nine-month operating cash flow of $8.013 million less $6.875 million in capital expenditures yields free cash flow of $1.138 million; the prior-year figure was $1.989 million. Dividends of $5.179 million significantly exceed this amount. Stock compensation of $0.365 million is small, but represents a cost to owners. The average share count, including potential shares from awards and similar instruments, edged down to 8.637 million; as of September 24, 8.651 million shares were outstanding.

Valuation: what the price assumes

The dated reference price of $21.49 and 8.651 million shares outstanding imply a market capitalization of about $185.9 million. Book equity—reported assets minus liabilities—was $164.928 million, or around $19.06 per share. This is not a reliable estimate of what shareholders would receive if the business were sold or wound down. Nine-month earnings of $0.61 per share equate, by simple calculation, to $0.81 per year and a price-to-earnings ratio of about 26; seasonality and tariff refunds limit this simple conversion to an annual figure. My base case describes a situation in 2 years: annual earnings of $1.00 times 16 would then equal $16.00 per share. To estimate a value at the analysis date, this model discounts the future value. That means reducing it to allow for an assumed required annual return of 12%: 16.00 / 1.12^2 = $12.76. The conservatively rounded-down price ceiling at the analysis date is $12.75. Cyclical furniture demand, cash flow that falls short of the dividend payout, and unproven sustained margins justify this cautious required return; it is not a measured cost-of-capital rate. The assumed earnings and multiples are my own scenarios, not company forecasts. Interim distributions are conservatively set to zero; future operating surpluses remain in the company and are not added separately again. No additional cash is added to this valuation based on earnings per share (EPS).

Scenarios

These are this analysis’s estimates for two years after the analysis date. The earnings multiples apply at that future point. In the unfavorable case, orders remain weak; $0.50 in normalized annual earnings at a multiple of 12 yields $6. In the base case, revenue and margins stabilize; $1.00 at a multiple of 16 yields $16. In the favorable case, capacity utilization and sales success rise substantially; $1.40 at a multiple of 18 yields $25.20. The three earnings assumptions are scenarios, not guidance. Future dividends are not guaranteed and are not included in the values. Discounting at the same 12% per year converts the future values of $6.00, $16.00, and $25.20 into values of $4.78, $12.76, and $20.09 at the analysis date. Comparison with the dated reference price is made exclusively using these present values. Dividends are not guaranteed, and no probability is assigned to any scenario.

Risks and reasons the assessment could be wrong

Furniture purchases are highly sensitive to income, real estate sales, and financing costs. Store operating costs and lease obligations continue even when sales weaken. Tariff policy can change purchase prices and margins; the refund should not be assumed to repeat. The liquid reserves and higher quarterly earnings are positives. The quarterly dividend declared on October 14, of $0.20, signals the board's confidence, but does not prove sustainable coverage by free cash flow.

Conclusion

The operating recovery is established, but the price still does not offer a discount to a conservative earnings value. Therefore, at the dated reference price, the stock is not attractive. A future reassessment requires stronger growth, sustainably higher earnings without one-off relief, and better cash generation after necessary spending on the business.
